Pro 6-Day Style Bike Racing Returns to the USA
For the first time in four decades, international professional 6-day cyclists will again thrill American arena crowds when they take to the boards at the inaugural Hollywood Championship Cycling (HCC) event planned for October 11 – 13, 2013 at the AEG Facilities owned and operated Velo Sports Center located at the StubHub Center in Carson , CA. The event marks the US return of one of cycling’s oldest and most exciting styles of racing and features 15 two-man corporate sponsored teams, representing countries and cities, competing in a variety of spectator oriented races over three days.
The popular 6-day race format began in the US over a century ago when the two-teammate relay formula was introduced as one of the four anchor sports entertainment activities of Madison Square Garden. The spectacle of two-man teams riding stripped down, single speed, pencil-thin-wheeled-bikes hurling around the steeply banked wooden velodrome quickly spread throughout the world. Today, European six-day events still pack in the crowds in cities such as Berlin, Rotterdam, Copenhagen, Gent, and Zurich, where the programs’ main event continues to be appropriately known as “The Madison.”
Hollywood Championship Cycling will be produced by three-time Olympian and former professional cyclist, Jack Simes lll, together with entrepreneur/philanthropist, Josh Rechnitz. Both Simes and Rechnitz are excited by the prospects. “There’s a solid plan in place,” Rechnitz said from his NYC base. “We view this race as a pilot event with wonderful future expansion possibilities. But, for now the focus is 100 percent on Hollywood Championship Cycling. We’re securing sponsors and riders now and working on the details with the Velo Sports Center for Columbus Day weekend.”
According to Simes, there has been a modern groundswell of interest in velodrome racing and American cyclists are ready for the challenge. “During the last decade, our riders have gained valuable experience in European sixes with many coming up through the UIV [International Cycling Union] U23 [under 23 year-old] competitions,” said Simes, “We’ll see the emergence of new cycling heroes and of course, a few villains. The visual excitement of them tightly stacked on the high track bankings, racing elbow to elbow with some of Europe’s best, is outstanding TV and arena sport,” he added.
Sponsors of HCC will reach a global audience through a wide range of elements. Some of these activations include live and taped broadcasts and webcasts, on-track branding, sponsorship of two-man teams, sponsorship of individual races on each night, live in arena announcements and sponsor interviews at the event, in program advertising, content marketing and more.
HCC Sponsors, along with cycling fans and clubs, will also be able to enjoy unique hospitality dining on the velodrome infield. “It’s like dinner theater except it’s exciting sport,” said Rechnitz. “Imagine enjoying a special dining experience right in the center of the action while being part of an important American track cycling milestone event. There’s nothing else like it.”
